This Week's Story

When times are difficult and choices disappear, people find alternatives to despair.

This Week’s Story relives American history and the Bible through brief inspiring stories presented on mp3 audio recordings and text for reading.

My choices are disappearing, Mom! part one

“Anne, what’s the matter?”

“My choices are disappearing Mom. Finding a job where I am respected, earning enough to pay for what I need or want, having friends who trust me and I trust them, where are those choices?”

“Anne, you are thinking about what you don’t have and you have decided it is impossible to have. Could you think about alternative choices or different ways of reaching what you want? Be careful what you choose.

“Now, please try something tasty from me. My mom as a special treat for my sisters, dad, and I, would make homemade deep-fried donuts.

“She didn’t use expensive ingredients, just what we had: milk, active dry yeast, granulated sugar, salt, butter, all-purpose flour, and oil with a high smoke point, no olive oil.

“Today before you came home, I made two dozen doughnuts. Would you like to try one?”

“I would, Mom! Oh-h-h! They taste good! I like how warm and flaky they are.

“Why haven’t you made these for us before?”

“Well, I was thinking I might have trouble with the dough-raising and how I need to be careful around the hot oil. I worried that I might not have time to finish my other work.

“I argued with myself, ‘Making donuts is a good memory from the past, but it is impossible to do now.’ At first, I wasn’t thinking about what could help me make these special donuts.

“I went to my computer and an old favorite cookbook and checked recipes for deep-fried doughnuts. I chose one that used ingredients I have in my cupboards.

What I read was fascinating! I learned facts that I didn’t know when I ate Mom’s doughnuts. I remembered the taste of the doughnuts and the feeling of Mom’s love. Those are memories I would like you to have, Anne.”

“Mom, I love home, when we talk, and you share!”

One morning Anne saw her mom reading a book. Its inside pages were falling out of their binding. “Mom, what are you reading?”

“It’s a wonderful Bible storybook my grandmother gave me when I was in fourth grade. I am fascinated at how well it communicates with young and much older people. People in the Bible have real problems similar to ours.

I read about when the Jews fled from slavery in Egypt. They were helped repeatedly by God. His help was meant to be unforgettable, yet many of them nastily complained when they did not receive what they expected. Sometimes they would reject God and copy the idol worship of surrounding nations. Their choices brought tears and loss of peace. Then war brought horror to guilty and innocent.

It was time for God to teach them His law and give them His commandments.

Todd Warren, Carlos Gamez, Gwen Crawford, and Barbara Steiner bring you this dual story of choice. Soon we return with how God gave His commandments as recorded in Exodus of the Bible. Please discover more stories from American history and the Bible at thisweeksstory.com.
