This Week's Story

Laugh with Will Rogers; see Goliath's defeat; and discover a microbe in a mama tick. It's all in This Week's Story!

This Week’s Story relives American history and the Bible through brief inspiring stories presented on mp3 audio recordings and text for reading.

Do you remember? part two

Recently we had a “Do you remember?” We revisited people presented in This Week’s Story. We were disgusted that Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell was often rejected as the first American woman medical doctor. We considered scientist Theobald Smith’s discovery. A deadly microbe can be in the eggs of mama ticks and passed to cattle. Thousands of cows died in the 1800’s from Texas fever. Some are threatened today.

We listened to Joseph’s brothers be charged with spying in Egypt. Jealousies had ripped their family.

Today we visit more people from This Week’s Story. They drop deep into us.

Peter, a guy who followed Jesus, remembers:

We were leisurely crossing the lake when wind began whipping through the hills nearby and down unto us. Waves were dumping water into our boat. Could we survive? Jesus had laid down for a nap. Somehow, he still was asleep. We shouted at him, “Don’t you care that we are going to drown?”

He sat up and looked around at us. We were staggering into each other as the boat was twisting wildly. He asked, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still not have faith in me?” He stood and commanded the waves and winds, “Quiet down.”

The air became calm. Water shimmered again in the sun and soon our boat was gliding across the lake.

This next clip is from a story many of us also had in grade school:

Goliath’s face curled with contempt. He called, “Am I a dog that you come to fight me with a stick?” He cursed David. “Come here. I’ll give your flesh to the birds.”

David replied, “You come with a sword, spear, and javelin. I come in the name of the Lord Almighty. Today He will conquer you and I will kill you. Everyone will know that the Lord does not need weapons to rescue His people. It is His battle, not ours.”

We laugh when we visit this next guy:

He rode away from home and into an adventurous three years. At a ranch job in Oklahoma the owner, Colonel Ewing, was asked by a visitor who had been watching Will sitting on a fence, “Why is he staying around?”

The owner laughed and replied, “In the first place, he’s so funny I can’t let him go, and in the second place, I’m just wondering if he’ll ever do anything.”

This free-spirited man, Will Rogers, caused Americans to laugh in good times and dreadful times.

Other Americans had dreams for which they had little experience, like a gold miner in this story from 1849:

“Laura, this is our opportunity!”

“George, you have a good job.”

“Not like mining gold. Bud told me that his brother is making $14.00 a day panning gold on the American River in California. Don’t forget; I make $1.25 a day.”

“George, you are a bank clerk in Missouri. Your job is dependable. You have a wife and two children. You do not know anything about how to get to California or what you’re going to do when you get there.”

Well, the stories continue, from the past and the present.
